We visited Kagoshima many times before eventually making it our home.
During those trips, we also stayed in Kirishima Onsen several times.
A relaxing hot spring.
A delicious dinner.
Even those two things alone were enough to make us happy.
But there was always one thing we noticed.
We often found ourselves with more time before bed than we had expected.
Sometimes we thought about spending the evening at the hotel bar.
But hotel bars occasionally closed earlier than we hoped.
And to be honest, sometimes we simply weren’t in the mood for a bar.
So every now and then, we took a taxi into the nearby town.
Those evenings became wonderful memories, too.
Still, what we really wanted wasn’t a place designed for tourists.
We wanted to discover the kinds of small places where local people spent their evenings.
Back then, we didn’t know the area very well.
Smartphones weren’t yet part of everyday life, so finding information wasn’t nearly as easy as it is today.
Most of the time, we simply visited the places recommended by our hotel.
We enjoyed every one of them.
But once in a while, we found ourselves wondering,
“I wonder if there are other places with a different atmosphere.”
A Memory of Ibusuki
One of our favorite memories comes from Ibusuki.
Simply walking through the entertainment district after leaving our hotel felt exciting.
Kirishima Onsen has its own unique charm as a hot spring resort.
However, when it comes to evening entertainment, the choices can sometimes be a little limited.
Today, it’s much easier to search for local information.
If your schedule allows, you might enjoy taking a short trip to Kokubu.
It’s about a 30-minute drive from Kirishima Onsen, and before long you’ll find yourself in a different kind of evening atmosphere.
You’ll find a wider variety of places to spend the evening, and the town has a character all its own.
Sometimes, the best part of traveling is taking a small detour.
Those unexpected evenings often become the memories you treasure most.
If you’re looking for karaoke, you’ll find wonderful places around Kirishima Onsen as well.
But if you’d like to spend an evening chatting with local people, Kokubu offers a different kind of experience.
You might hear stories about Kagoshima that you would never find in a guidebook.
You might discover little pieces of local culture that only appear through everyday conversations.
Looking back, those evenings became some of our favorite travel memories.
At the end of a day’s journey, it’s nice to finish the evening with a few smiles and a few conversations.
If your travels bring you to Kirishima, we’d be delighted if you chose to spend part of your evening with us at Chiduru.
Perhaps “Chiduru Time” will become one of those quiet memories that stays with you long after your journey has ended.
