Staying at Urban Hotel Kokubu? Discover a Quiet Snack Bar in Kirishima

Over the years, more hotels have opened around Kokubu.

Among them, Urban Hotel Kokubu is one of the closest to the downtown area.

It’s especially known for its homemade breakfast, and I’ve stayed there myself a few times when I simply wanted to enjoy the feeling of being away from home for a night.

The staff are warm and welcoming, and it’s the kind of hotel that makes you think,

“I’d like to stay here again someday.”

Of course, there’s nothing wrong with spending a quiet evening relaxing in your hotel room after work.

But if you’ve come all the way to Kirishima, I hope you’ll take a little walk through the town after dark.

I’m actually quite a picky eater, so when I travel, I often choose familiar restaurants or chain stores where I know what to expect.

Even so, there are times when I find myself wanting something more than a meal.

I miss meeting people.

When we traveled, I often explored local snack bars with the woman who helps me run Chiduru. Our guests simply call her “Mama.”

After a long day, we weren’t looking for somewhere loud or crowded.

We wanted a place where we could simply relax and have a conversation.

Not a stylish cocktail bar where you feel you should sit a little straighter.

Just an ordinary snack bar where you could stop by without feeling out of place.

We weren’t looking for deep conversations.

Just somewhere we could say,

“Today was quite a day.”

A place where we could slowly let go of the day before heading back to the hotel.

Looking back, I think that was what we were searching for.

During our travels and business trips, we visited many different places.

Hotels and taxi drivers often recommended popular local bars.

We enjoyed many of them.

But popular places are often lively and energetic.

When you’re tired after work, that isn’t always what you’re looking for.

For the people making the recommendation, it was probably

“a fun place with good prices.”

But what we wanted that evening was something quieter.

Rather than returning straight to an empty hotel room, we wanted to sit down somewhere and say,

“A lot happened today.”

Sometimes, sharing an ordinary conversation with someone before going to bed is enough to make the whole day feel lighter.

Perhaps it’s because you’re in a place where nobody knows you.

Somehow, it’s easier to let your guard down.

For us, spending an hour in a quiet snack bar after work became a gentle way to reset before the next day.

We’ve welcomed many guests who were in Kirishima on business.

The night before an important meeting, we’ve often raised a glass together and said,

“Here’s to tomorrow’s success!”

It lasts for only one evening.

Yet the next day, we sometimes receive a message that simply says,

“The meeting went well.”

Every time that happens, we’re reminded why we love doing what we do.

Some guests visit us every evening while they’re staying in Kirishima.

Once, we even delivered a homemade bento lunch to a guest’s workplace.

Moments like that often lead to conversations such as,

“If you ever come to my hometown, let me show you around.”

Whenever someone says those words to us, we’re reminded how grateful we are that this little bar has brought so many wonderful people into our lives.

When our guests leave Kirishima for business trips of their own, we sometimes joke,

“Next time we’ll see you in your town.”

“Then I suppose Chiduru is just the Kirishima branch office.”

We laugh together, but those conversations often turn into lasting friendships.

One guest works as a television news cameraman.

From time to time, he’ll send us a message saying,

“Watch tonight’s news. One of my stories will be on.”

Others tell us how an important business meeting went.

Some send us photographs from their travels.

Some exchange local specialties with us.

Although we live in different places and lead different lives, we’re still able to stay in touch and share little moments with one another.

I’ve always thought that’s one of life’s quiet miracles.

Some encounters last only a single evening.

Others continue for years.

For us, those lasting connections have grown out of the time we spend together at Chiduru.

That’s why our website includes a timeline that has continued since 2016.

Rather than simply introducing our bar, we’ve chosen to share the ordinary moments of our everyday lives.

The changing seasons.

Conversations with our guests.

The little moments that rarely make the headlines but mean so much to us.

Before your first visit, we hope you’ll take a little time to explore those stories.

We hope they’ll help you get to know not only our bar, but also the people behind it.

Perhaps that will make choosing a local bar while traveling or on a business trip feel just a little less uncertain.

And perhaps your evening in Kirishima will become one of those memories that quietly stays with you long after your journey has ended.

We’ll simply keep sharing little moments from our everyday lives, one story at a time.

And we hope Chiduru will always be a place where you’ll feel welcome whenever your travels bring you back to Kirishima.

We’ll be here, just as we always have been.
