Creating Memories to Leave Behind
“Please take lots of photos for us.”
That was the first request we received from the husband before our Adult Excursion.
Then he quietly added,
“This is one way of leaving something meaningful behind.”
He had devoted most of his life to his work.
Perhaps this day was his way of preserving moments that had passed by too quickly.
As we spent the day together, one thing became clear.
He smiled more.
He talked more.
He seemed happier than we had ever seen him before.
Perhaps, even if only a little, he felt he had begun to make peace with something that had been on his mind for many years.
Ideally, we wished they could have spent this precious time together, just the two of them.
But we also hoped that nothing would get in the way of making those moments truly meaningful.
So we simply shared the journey with them.
Looking back, we believe that was exactly what he wanted.
Not only to leave photographs behind,
but also to leave behind the memory of sharing the same time and place.
In Japan, there is a concept called Shūkatsu—a thoughtful way of preparing for the final stage of life while cherishing the time that remains.
At first, it may sound a little sad.
But what we witnessed that day was something very different.
It was gentle.
It was hopeful.
It was simply about creating precious memories while there was still time.
The happiest moment of the day was seeing him smiling as he gently pushed his wife’s wheelchair up a small hill.
It was a smile we will never forget.
Moments like these gently remind us that the time we share with the people we love is precious.
As long as we still have the chance, may we cherish every moment we share with the people we love—and create memories that will stay in our hearts forever.
