Finding the Place That Feels Right

When we first opened Chiduru in Kokubu, I imagined that one day everyone in town would know our little snack bar.

After more than ten years, I sometimes found myself wondering if we would ever meet someone new again.

Surely, I thought, anyone looking for a place like ours would have found us by now.

Then, not long ago, someone walked through our door for the very first time.

He told us that he had been visiting bars for a while.

There was nothing wrong with them.

But little by little, he began to feel that something wasn’t quite right anymore.

He wanted somewhere quieter.

Somewhere he could enjoy the evening without feeling surrounded by noise.

Somewhere he could simply relax.

As he described the kind of place he had been searching for, I couldn’t help smiling.

It sounded very much like Chiduru.

That evening happened to be especially quiet.

There were no loud voices.

No pressure to join every conversation.

No need to compete with the music.

He could enjoy his drink, sing karaoke if he wished, or simply spend the evening talking.

It wasn’t exciting.

It was comfortable.

Perhaps that was exactly what he had been looking for.

As we grow older, I think something changes inside us.

When we’re young, excitement often feels important.

Busy places, loud music, and crowded nights can be part of the fun.

But over time, many of us begin looking for something different.

Not because we’ve stopped enjoying life.

Simply because we’ve changed.

The places where we feel at home change too.

A friend once told me that successful bars must always attract new customers and constantly change.

Perhaps that’s true for some businesses.

But I don’t believe every place has to be that way.

People change throughout their lives.

Their interests change.

Their pace changes.

And sometimes, the place that once felt comfortable no longer does.

That isn’t a bad thing.

It’s simply part of growing older.

These days, much of the world seems to speak mainly to younger generations.

Television commercials.

Restaurants.

Entertainment.

Even nightlife.

If you’ve reached a certain stage in life, you may quietly notice that fewer places seem to be speaking to you.

You’re not looking for a retirement club.

You’re not looking for a lively party either.

You’re simply looking for somewhere that feels right.

Somewhere you don’t have to pretend.

Somewhere you can simply be yourself.

If that’s how you feel, perhaps you’re not looking for something new at all.

Perhaps you’re simply looking for the place that fits who you’ve become.

We hope Chiduru can be one of those places.

Not because we’re special.

But because we believe quiet evenings, gentle conversations, and feeling at ease are worth protecting.

If you’re ever visiting Kirishima and find yourself looking for a peaceful evening rather than a busy one, we’d be delighted to welcome you.

Sometimes, the greatest comfort isn’t discovering somewhere exciting.

Sometimes, the greatest comfort is simply finding a place where you can be yourself.
